Obituary of William Howard Brakefield

Dr. William (Bill) Brakefield, M.D. born on February 14, 1933 in Carbon Hill, Alabama, died on December 10, 2012 in Talladega, Alabama. Dr. Brakefield was a graduate of Howard College where he received a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1954. Thereafter, he attended The Medical College of Alabama at the University of Alabama and was admitted to the Medical Association of Alabama in July 1959. Dr. Brakefield was elected as a Fellow to the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists in 1964. He practiced medicine for more than 50 years, delivering almost 6000 babies in his tenure. He was an active member of Alabama Medical Association where he received his 50-year pin in 2008. He is preceded in death by his wife, Shirley Bradberry Brakefield and his parents Howard and Zula Mae Brakefield. He is survived by his wife, Marion Hocutt Brakefield of Talladega, two sons, Marc Brakefield (Anna) of Tuscaloosa and Chris Brakefield (Jane) of Birmingham, two daughters, Janie Molliston Evans of Moody and Meg Molliston Cofield of Talladega, two sisters, Bettye Naugher of Birmingham and Laura Breck of Fairhope. He was the very proud grandfather of six grandchildren: Clark, Hill, Anne Marie and Lindsey Brakefield and Mali and Lauren Cofield. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Talladega where he served as a Deacon. He also proudly served as a volunteer member of the Lakeside Hospice Board of Directors. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations to be made to Lakeside Hospice in Pell City in honor of Dr. Bill Brakefield for the continued care of indigent patients and bereavement ministries. The family will receive visitors from 10:00-11:00 a.m. at First Baptist Church of Talladega on Thursday, December 13, 2012. Funeral service will follow at 11:00 a.m. Interment will be held at 3:30 p.m. at Elmwood Cemetery and Mausoleum in Birmingham, Alabama.
